Half the fun of writing this blog is learning the odd names that get assigned to the wildflowers! Blue Dicks (Dichelostemma capitatum) has only two grass like leaves and grows to about a foot or two and blends with native grasses. This native plant grows from corms that animals will eat. The corms were also a staple for native tribes. The corms can survive the historic grassland burning, and can lie dormant for years before restarting. I could not find any history of the common name... 6/04/2013.
We spotted many of these on the sunny oak and grass slopes at the Cooper Mountain Nature Park.
