Moth Mullein

This tall, weedy spike of a plant grows along roads, in fields, and in other disturbed areas. It blooms all summer and has a stalk of multiple, attractive yellow flowers. It is native to Europe and considered invasive in many places. Because Moth Mullein is a biennial, it grows short and does not flower the first year. In the second year it can reach five feet, and blooms the yellow flowers near the top of the plant.

Moth Mullein (Verbascum blatteria) flower stamens resemble a moth's antennae, hence the common name. I have to admit, I am fond of the Latin name as well! Just say it out loud and you'll know what I mean! (6/09/2013)
