Common Wild Radish

If you drive around Washington County this month, you'll see some of this Wild Radish (Raphanus sativus), especially in fields and along rural roads. It grows in huge colonies, about two feet high or just here and there. The four-petal flowers are white to light purple or yellow and from a distance look like confetti sprinkled on plants. The cultivated radishes we buy at the grocery store are derived from this plant!

The wild radish is in the Mustard family, a European native, and is described as "troublesome" in guidebooks! We spotted these troublemakers at Jackson Bottom Wetlands, where they are abundant. 6/10/2013.
