Douglas Spirea

This colorful flowering shrub is a native plant and is named after David Douglas. It usually grows near streams or other wet locations at low to mid elevations. The 6-8 inch tall flowers remind me of bottle brushes! The Douglas Spirea (Spiraea douglasii) blooms attract butterflies and bees. We found these blooming at Jackson Bottom Wetlands (6/10/2013). Curiously, it is a member of the Rose family.
